Aintree Hospital Liverpool
I work mainly within general rheumatology looking after patients with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondyloarthritis. I have worked in the department for the last 3 years having moved over from a mainly orthopaedic background, with a short dabble in gynaecology/obstetric theatres (I made a swift retreat from there!)
When I first moved into rheumatology and Sarah spoke about her vasculitis patients I was instantly keen to know more, the fact it is a multi-organ system disease interests me, the complexities and nuances of treatment and monitoring are fascinating to me. Luckily Sarah is a fantastic teacher who is happy to let me shadow her and answer my sometimes daft questions.
When it comes to fatigue it is one of the symptoms that occurs in all manifestations of auto-immune disease. It is often overlooked and dismissed yet can be more debilitating that the classic disease symptoms. I often say if I had a drug for fatigue I would be a millionaire!
I have a real interest I the use of exercise, mindfulness and dietary support in treating our patients. The tips, tricks and techniques I use with my general rheumatology patients can be adapted and implemented for patients with vasculitis, we just need to sell it to them.
