Balini Balasubramaniam is currently Consultant Ophthalmologic Surgeon specialising in Uveitis, currently based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Clinical Senior Research Fellow, at the University of Birmingham.
After completing internship, to further her training in Ophthalmology, she completed a National Eye Research Council (NERC) sponsored year as research fellow based at the University of Bristol and Bristol Eye Hospital. She was awarded the research Founders cup Prize at the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress for her presentation of her work on human retinal microglia and retinal progenitor cells. This led to a further 3 years in laboratory-based research involving development of models to understand innate immune signalling by human retinal microglia cells and further evaluated their role in immune manipulation of human retinal progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation and a PhD from the University of Bristol, sponsored by the Dr Hans and Gertrude Hirsch Scholarship through NERC.
Her Ophthalmology residency was based in the Severn deanery in southwest England and mainly based at Bristol Eye Hospital with training placements also based at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon and the Royal United Hospital in Bath. During her Ophthalmology residency, she qualified as a fellow of the European board of ophthalmology (FEBO), a fellow of the royal college of ophthalmologists in the UK (FRCOphth) and gained further experience in the management of complex patients with inflammatory and degenerative conditions under the mentorship of Professor Andrew Dick at Bristol Eye Hospital.
Her vision to integrate the scientific workbench with patient centred care throughout her career has led to her current her current role and active participation in Ophthalmology clinical trials at UHB.
