Adrian Shields

University Hospitals Birmingham

Adrian Shields is a clinical immunologist interested in understanding the mechanisms that protect us from infections and how those systems fail in individuals with primary and secondary immunodeficiencies and immunodysregulatory disorders. He is Immunology lead for the University of Birmingham Clinical Immunology Service, a translational immunology laboratory that cross-cuts academia, the NHS and industry.  His recent research work has examined COVID-19 risk factors in immunologically vulnerable populations, the antibody response to vaccination in individuals living with immune deficiencies cohorts and occupational risks of infection amongst UK health care workers. He has also described novel genomic variants causing monogenic immune deficiency and immune dysregulatory disease affecting the complement cascade and T cell receptor signalling.
